Class Action Over Pfizer’s Depo-Provera

December 22, 2005

Another headache for Pfizer:

Canadian women looking for a trouble-free way to prevent pregnancy may be making themselves susceptible to osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become fragile and more likely to fracture.

A $700-million class action lawsuit has been filed against the makers of Depo-Provera, a birth control injection prescribed to more than 600,000 Canadians last year. The lawsuit alleges that women who have taken the contraceptive have developed osteoporosis.

Depo-Provera is made by international drug conglomerate Pfizer, also responsible for popular prescription drugs Viagra, Zoloft and Celebrex. Users are given an injection every three months and have a less than one per cent chance of getting pregnant while on the medication, according to the drug maker’s website.

Tracey Bourque, 33, recently found out she has the bone density of a 55-year-old woman. Bourque and her doctor wonder if it is linked to her use of Depo-Provera.

Depo-Provera was tested in the 1980s and approved in Canada in 1997. Two million prescriptions for the drug have been written in Canada in the past four years.

One year ago, Pfizer warned Canadian and American officials the drug could lead to bone density loss. The United States issues a warning shortly afterwards saying the drug should not be used as a long-term contraceptive. Health Canada issued similar statements in November, 2004, and June and July this year.

“The data indicate that women who use Depo-Provera may lose significant (bone mineral density),” states the July Health Canada warning. “The data also indicate that bone loss is greater with increasing duration of use and may not be completely reversible.”

[...]

According to lawyer Glyn Hotz, Bourque isn’t the only concerned person. He told CTV that he has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of a group of woman who also worry about a link between Depo-Provera and bone deterioration.

“We’ve seen people who have had multiple fractures, required knee replacements,” he said Monday. “We’ve got somebody who is in her twenties who is on the borderline for having a hip replacement.”

Hello good afternoon I’m not to sure who to ask but I was wondering about
class action lawsuits against the depo provera contraceptive side affects.
I have no idea who I
would contact about my side affects or to find out if they are enough to
join a class action lawsuit if there are any I could join or how I would go
about doing that? I was on depo provera from when I was 14 to 18 I am 23

I also have had many horrible side effects from depo. I was on and off the depo for about 12 years. I was only told recently to take calcium pills, but never given the truth about the depo. I am 33 years old and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis in my left hip and osteopenia in my right hip and spinal cord. I also had my gall bladder removed 3 weeks ago. I am waiting on test results to see if I am in early menopause. I have not had a period in almost a year and even after taking provera to bring on my period- NOTHING! I am an emotional wreck since coming off of the shot. I am crying for no reason, suffer from anxiety, mild depression, crying spells and restless nights of sleep.

I have countless other medical problems and I believe a majority of them are caused by the depo provera. I not only want to pursue a class action lawsuit, but I want this off the market so that other women do not have to go through what we are! I will research until I find these answers and promise to post anything that I find. You are all in my prayers!

I am not sure what i need to do but i was 14 when i received the depo. It was december of 2001, then I received another shot in Feb. 2002. I started to get really sick i couldnt go to school for like 3 weeks. The dr realized they gave me an over dose. I received the next shot in may 2002 and every 3 months after that. I stop receiving the depo in october of 2004 and I have had lower back pain as of June of 2004. My back pain is so severe that some times I have pain all the way to my feet and i can’t move sometimes. Also, I have not had my periods since i have been off the depo. It has been almost 4 years and i cant concieve either. what can i do because before the depo everything was fine. please let me know something. Am i the only one?

I started taking the shot after having my second child in 1994. I’ve had certain medical issues throughout the years, yet until 4 years ago when I moved out of state and had to see a new doctor that did a thorough examine I started learning about the side effects. I have been diagnosed with cancer, cysts, pelvic congestive syndrom, osteoporosis, amoung ailments doctors have no answer for. I thought I was a hypocondriact. (sp?) This gives me a relief that I now know why all these things are happening to me. After everything I have read on the internet, I have been the longest person taking depo. I want my life back, I know I will never get it but suing will make the rest of it more comfortable because everyday is a struggle with the pain I am in!!!!

  7. Terry on July 13th, 2008 9:14 pm

I took Depo from ages 14-17. I’m 28 years old now and have irregular cycles, back pain, feet and knee pain, depression, and serious headaches. I’ve been prescribed provera which made me violent when I’m a laid back easy going person, then progesterone pills which help me have a cycle still not normal, but without them I get nothing. Then I’ve taken several doses of clomid and haven’t been able to conceive. I’ve been trying to have a baby for 8 years now and nothing. I’ve puzzled my gyn. She is clueless about what’s going on with me. I’ve done every test possible. The stories I’ve been reading online have made me realize that all along it has been the effects of the shots. So I have entered in to the class action lawsuit. No money is going to help me conceive a child on my own, but if I do come into a settlement atleast now I can adopt or try surrogacy. Thank to all the stories of women with the same problems as me. God Bless!

I have been on the depo for 7 yrs and my doctor never told me about the depo problem until i had my shot last month and thats when they told me that it causes you to loose bone density and that I needed tohave a bone scan. Well i went and had a bone scan a wk after I had my depo, but I still have not received the results back. Two wks ago I had 2 teeth to completley fall out. i have never had teeth to fall out before for no reason. When i went to my dentist, he told me that the depo can make your teeth crumble due to the loss of calcium. Has anyone else had this problem, b/c i just paid over 5K to get my teeth fixed

  9. nhkat on August 2nd, 2008 9:13 pm

I took depro provera in 94 after my second child, was never told of the risk of osteoporosis, then 3 years ago was diagnosed with it in my hips. I saw that there is a Canadian lawsuit for this reason, but can’t seem to find anything about a US one.

  10. sophy miles on August 6th, 2008 8:05 am

I have read about a Canadian Depo Provera class action suit against Pfizer Canada, Inc and Pfizer Inc. I’m an American who has suffered damages from depo-provera and am inquiring about any new information on, or new trials against producers of this drug in the United States. I was on depo for 5 years (2000-2005), from 19 to 24 years of age, before warnings had been put on box labels… I have suffered from bone fractures and hair loss and have not received any helpful health treatment or reconciliation. I also still have traces of depo in my system (3 years later): I do not have a regular menstrual cycle (including no menstrual cycle for 1 1/2 years after ending use); I continue to show loss of bone density and have had to change my active life-style (I have a rare fracture in my left ankle; also am facing chronic back/knee/joint pain); I continue to have hair loss and hair brittleness.
Any advise would be very much appreciated!

I too have suffered from the use of Depo. After a divorce, then remarriage, my new husband and I were faced with birth control issues. At the time, we didn’t want to do anything permanent as we hadn’t quite ruled out having a child of our own together. After discussing options with my doctor, Depo seemed to be a good idea. I was never told of the potential risks of osteoporosis. I was on the shot from approximately 1999 to 2006. I had no idea it was causing damage to my bones. I only discovered this when having my annual exam in 2006. My doctor suddenly took me off the shot and sent me for a bone density scan. I was called back into her office a few weeks later to find out that I had osteopenia in my lumbar spine and left hip. I was an emotional reck! I couldn’t believe at 42 the condition I was in. My friends and family were shocked as well. They believed since I lived a healthy lifestyle including running, bicycling, and lifting weights, that my bones would be fine. My doctor told me to take calcium pills and hopefully time would self-correct my condition. I suffered pain in my left hip as well as my right ankle while on the shot and still sometimes to date. My menstrual cycle has been very frequent and intense since I’ve been off the shot (not like before). I am having a repeat bone density test on Monday to see if my condition has improved. As far as Misty’s dental issues, I too have suffered an increase in dental problems.

  12. Chelle on August 25th, 2008 2:17 pm

I took the Depo for a total of 8 years, and now at the young age of 28, I have osteopenia. Something else the “black box” warning doesn`t tell you is that calcium loss from this injection doesn`t just hurt your bones it also affects your teeth. After this warning came out, I had to have about $6,000 of dental work done. Thanks Depo-Provera!!!!

  13. Marie Reynen on August 26th, 2008 6:40 pm

My beautiful daughter took Depo Provera at the age of 17. If I had of known she was going to get this “injection of poison” I would have convinced her to take something else for birth control. At the time we were in a life or death struggle with our 15 yr old son..who had been ill since he was eleven. This drug has caused my daughter (who is now 27) to gain a tremendous amount of weight and the weight came on very quickly! I knew it was nothing to do with her eating habits or excercise level. She also started to lose hair on the top of her head and developed excess hair on her arms and a bit on her face. She is lucky if she gets one period a year and she ONLY HAD ONE INJECTION of this TOXIC DRUG! Nobody has done anything and my daughter seems to have just accepted this. Now she is married and wanting a baby.. she’s been told she would have to tale birth control to “force” a period to happen and then take fertility drugs in order to conceive. There is no guarantee. I am so angry! the doctors and the pharmaceutical industry work together hand and hand. They PROTECT EACH OTHER. NO DOCTOR WILL COME RIGHT OUT AND HAVE THE COURAGE TO SAY….YES!! THIS DRUG IS RESPONSIBLE . i KNOW IT IS….i KNEW IT THEN AND I KNOW IT NOW!!! My daughter was always healthy and grew up in a health conscious home. She now has to deal with the “stigma” of being overweight. The cruel hurtful comments that ignorant people make. I feel like screaming out ..”educate yourself!!! not everyone who is heavy is heavy because they are lazy or eat too much!! She is a sweet girl who didn’t deserve this. I want someone to be responsible for ruining her health. She recieved this injection at a walk in clinic. Was told “take this it’s great! One injection and no worried about getting pregnant for 3 whole monthes!! What young girl wouldn’t jump at the chance? an older person would probably research the drug side effects first…but not a 17 yr old. I want to file a suit . I f anyone has suggestions or can help me please contact me. Shannon (my daughter) was a healthy( normal weight )attractive girl before this drug ruined her.
    Thank you

is there a lawsuit against depo for not being able to have a child?

  15. Victoria on September 13th, 2008 1:50 pm

I was only on mine for about 1 to 2 years after I had my child they gave it to me and with my experiences first it started off with having my period for 6 months straight no days off, then it went to loosing my hair in the shower and I mean alot, then it went to having numbness in my arm and very bad chest pains felt like I was going to have a heart attack, I was in the hospital 2 or 3 times for that and then later on my periods was coming every two weeks and then sometimes they would last 2 or 3 weeks straight but then start again 2 weeks after I was off my period no matter how many weeks they lasted, and now my daughter is 4 and its been about 1 1/2 to 2 years since ive been off of it this month, and I still can not have anymore kids and we have been trying and trying forever it seems like, this shot has really messed up my life and I tell everyone that I know not to take this shot.

  16. michelle Howells on September 24th, 2008 9:53 am

I took the depo shot from the age of 16-21 almost 22.. the years were 1997-2002.. i had the crazy hospitalizations of stomach area pains with no explanations , from the time i gave birth to the present i have not stopped LACTATING… my oldest and last kid as i had my tubes tied is almost 3.. ive been lactating 11 years.. i also had easy fractures to my foot , tailbone etc.. at a few of the reoccuring hospital visits they noted i had excessive calcium in my urine.. which upon research is a sign of possible bone loss. i do have it documented.. and after being on the shot 3 years i noticed my teeth feeling thin or fraile.. about 2 years ago they started to get very sensitive and finally started to break apart and the enamel was just peeling off in chunks.. after dentists and dentists.. there was nothing they could do so I HAD TO HAVE ALL MY TEETH REMOVED!!! because of my teeth showing signs of problems i demanded a bone density test because of the depo shots black box warning.. i didnt have any knowledge of osteoporosis until after i was OFF the shot.. and it was until almost 2-3 years later that they announced the warning.. so how would i have known that i should be tested for a disease that women in the 60s should be worrying about.. it was may 2008 that i had my bone scan and the results came back that I have the bones of a 70 year old women.. ive called lawyers all over the us and even emailed dozens with no responses or responses that they arent taking on clients.. wheres the help for us.. the women that had no warning.. how were we to know about sumthing that wasnt there when we used the shot.. where was or warning.. it may be 6 years after the shot but with the documents of excessive urine and all the hospital files isnt that enough proof that depo caused what is happening to me and the other women.. did anyone else test for caclium in the urine?? i even had a catscan and have a picture of built up calcium in my body.. What can we do to get back what we have lost.. i dont recomment the new osteoporosis drugs as the side effects are just as costly as the depo shot.. please do research before taking any of those pills ladies.. they are just as toxic!!!! they are doing as much harm to your bones .. !!! im 27 with 70 year old bones and no teeth .. wheres the justice for me ???? is there anyone out there that knows about a lawyer or any where we can sign up for a class action suit??? email me stikkibuns81@aol.com

I was on depo provera for 9 years, I got off of it to have another baby. It took my period 11 months to become regular again. I took an herbal pill to regulate my menstrual, it worked. Once my period was regular, I started tracking ovulation and was able to become pregnant. I was pregnant with twins, I had them at 29 weeks because my placenta was separating from the wall. I had 3 previous pregnancies without complications. I strongly feel the depo had something to do with my early delivery. I have been diagnosed with Osteopenia in the left hip and lower spinal. I filed a lawsuit in Florida, and lost because Florida doesn’t consider Ostopenia as a injury, only if something breaks!

If any of you need any information, please don’t hesitate to email.

    Thanks,

I recived the Depo. shot July, 10th 2008 the day after i had my first born son, I have been bleeding since that day!!!!!! The same day i was sent home from the hospital, i had been home for about 30min when my father rushed me to the hospital because i couldn’t breath and started to feel dizzy. The doctor gave me a breathing treatment and sent me home. when it was time for my six week check up i call the hospital and told them i was still bleeding, they told me to make a another app. after the bleeding stopped. i made an app. in october to see a doc but the pain in my lower back and cramps got so bad i couldnt wait. i went to emergency, they told me i had PCOS and sent me back home. i went to my app. the next week, the doc apologized he said i did’t have PCOS they were wrong he told me it was because of the depo. shot he also said i would be bleeding for the next nine months he told me to take Ibuprofe 800mg every 6 hours for pain…hahah i wish it was that EASY!!!! he also tried to give me more birth control still having my bleeding problems, i told him i would never take any birth control again the pills make me sick the patch gave me blood clots never again condoms will just have to work. since i have had this shot i have severe anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, ovarian cysts, back pain, cramps, neck pain, always tired, and never leave my house. PLEASE if there is a class action suit i would like to join. i wish you all the best this isnt easy!!!!!

my son was born 12-14-07. At the end ob february i got the shot for the 1st and only time. I started with migrane, a horrible wrist pain (both), spotting for 7 weeks. Since august restarted, and my period just came back in october. We wanted to have another baby that’s why I only got it once, blurry vision and maybe more things that I don’t know it there are related. Since everything been irregular I went to see the dr. and find out why I wasn’t getting my period… my surprise, I got multiples cyst in both of my ovaries and a fibroid… My option get histerectomia , get pregnant with the risk of misscarrieage or a premature baby or remove those things and get pregnant and get a histerectomia.
I’m breastfeeding and i read this can past to my child. This is my only one and I’m 34

I received the Depo Provera Shot on September 24, 2008 as it was supposed to help stop my heavy periods as a result of my fibroid tumors. My Gynecologist never advised me of the possible side effects. I was only advised that I would no longer have periods. It would stop me from being anemic and I would start feeling less tired. (I never was feeling tired). I had 2 heavy days of bleeding during my menstrual cycle and I took Iron pills for the anemia. I really did not need this injection. I am so stupid - I was thinking this would help with the heavy periods. Since October 4th I have not stopped spotting or bleeding. I am about to go Crazy. This is only after on inection. The Gynecologist then prescribed Birth control pills to see if this would help me stop Bleeding. It is now November and I am bleeding even worse as she think the thinning of the my uterine lining is causing my fibroids to bleed. She now has prescribed estrogen pills (Estradiol) to try and build my uterine lining back up so hopefully the bleeding will stop. If this does not work I may have to have surgery. I just want to SCREAM!!! I can not have sex - too much bleeding. ANYONE, PLEASE, PLEASE RESEARCH THE SIDE EFFECTS BEFORE TAKING THIS INJECTION. I would be due for my second shot in December. I will not be taking that shot. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can stop the bleeding. Please emai me!!!!!

Hi, I’m 45 years old and started taking the shot in March 07 and in Sept 07 the day after I had my 3rd shot I was taken to the ER with severe anxiety attack and hypoglicemia. Four days later another anxiety attack and another trip to the ER. I had asked my OBGYN if these symptoms could be related to the shot and she said absolutely not. So I kept getting the shot while my nightmare of panic, anxiety, palpitations, depression and hypoglicemia was getting worse and worse. I was afraid of sitting home alone but also afraid of going anywhere by myself. Even walking into the grocery store would give me palpitations. I’ve always had a very busy life and could not understand why all of a sudden I was not able to do anything anymore, I could only go to work and back (because I had no choice). So frustrating…. I saw psychiatrists, endocrinologists, tried everything under the sun (betablockers, antidepressants, benzo) to get rid of this awful feeling that was slowly taking my life away and ruining my marriage. Last week I decided to do some researches and - OMG!!! - could not believe how many women had the same symptoms!!! I don’t know why I did not think about it before but I was glad I had found out just in time as I was due for my next shot this week. Now I’m just hoping I can flush this poison out of my body as soon as possible …. after 15 months of hell, I want my life back!!! WHY DO WE HAVE TO FIND OUT OURSELVES AND NO DOCTOR CAN PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER???
I also would like to know if there is a class action suit in the US against Pfizer for these awful and painful side effects. Good luck to all of you….Maria. foti63@comcast.net

I was also on the Depo shot in 200-2002 and I have had horrible side effects from the drug, hair loss, BIG weight gain, bone density loss and my period is never the same and I am having problems getting pregnant. Who do we go to for this lawsuit I want to be involved NOW!

  31. Megan on February 4th, 2009 7:48 pm

I was on the depo shot for 4 years. I got my first shot July 2003, the end of August ‘03 I was rushed to the ER with severe back pain, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. I was diagnosed with having Kidney Stones. Shortly after I began with severe migraines to the point where I was unable to leave my bed for days upon days (causing me to eventually fail out of a college). I was on the depo for a period of 4 yrs and within that four years, I saw a Neurologist every 4 months for migraine treatment, a Urologist for kidney stone treatment, and also ended up with a cyst on my ovary, which eventually ruptured causing me great pain.

The neurologist said that there was the possibiliy that the depo caused the migraines and the urologist said that anything was possible with the cause of kidney stones. My OBGYN denied all of it, saying it was the food I ate or “genetics”. I stopped the depo about 2 years ago. I still get severe migraines (can’t function) and after having surgery I **knock on wood** have not had any other kidney stones.

I was recently diagnosed with a herniated disc in my lumbar (wondering about going for a bone scan). In my eyes, there is no reason a 23 yr old (or anyone under the age of 65 for that matter) should have these types of problems. Some days I feel like a 93yr old woman with the way my body aches.

I want in. Any info on an American lawsuit I want to know about it.

    I’m 15 and I had my Depo shot December 20th, 2008 or so…

I’ve always been really sick. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with lupus and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. My mom made me get a Depo shot to ensure that I wouldn’t get pregnant. (I’ve been in a serious relationship for almost 3 years).

My libido has completely died and even after, at one point, 2 hours of foreplay, I absolutely could not get aroused. I still can’t.

Everyone has noticed that I’ve been extremely depressed. I have mood swings all the time and cry over the stupidest things. I’ve also been having random dizzy spells. I haven’t had my period at all since I had the shot, and just had really strange irregular bleeding at very random times.

Even though I was very sick before, I’ve been worse lately. As of right now, I’ve missed almost every day of this semester of school. I’ve only been to school 4 days this entire semester, and school started on January 5th.

I’m so scared that I might get osteoporosis and have problems with fertility later in life. I just wanted to make love to my boyfriend! Had I known it would completely screw up my life, I would have just used condoms without the shot!

When I went to the doctor to get this shot all they said was that my period might be off and that I might gain a few pounds! No one said anything about ANY of these side effects!

If anyone has any info on a US lawsuit please tell me…

It has been many years since I have dealt with this issue. I was 19 or 20 years old when I got the depo shot…I only had 2 shots, and on top of that, I also did not receive an examine…the gyno just put me on it to control my periods, because they were so heavy.

In October 2001, my father found me in toxic shock. He then rushed me to the emergency room. I had a temperature of 105 degrees, it then took them 8hrs. to figure out after numerous tests that I was not pregnant, but I had a 10lb. tumor in my uterus . I was on my period when I went to the emergency room. My period was like clock work every month, but extremely heavy and clotted. The tumor was backwards and smashing my kidneys and stomach, after the surgery (mind you I was only 23) the doctor made me say goodbye to my family, when I woke, I then spent 8 days in ICU, had my stomach pumped for 2 days, 24 enemas, hysterectomy, had to learn how to walk again, due to the 12 inch scar down my stomach.

I am now 30. Now that I look back, I am pissed off! Depression, alcoholism, thankfully I have had a set of parents who saw me through this….they recommended that I let this go….I can’t. I have since found the love of my life….but this urge still haunts me to this day….I want justice damnit!!!! I can never bear children and had that right ripped from me overnight…. I am here now for a reason and FINALLY after everyone telling me to let it go…I have a wonderful man who is helping me pursue justice of some sorts…I can’t get health care, thankfully I am extremely healthy (physically) I guess…I have a lot of symptoms mentioned above. Time will tell what happens to me.

I only had 1 shot, and I feel like I haven’t been the same since (and wonder if I’ll ever be the same). I have severe migraines now–never had them before. My other symptoms include hair loss, heart palpatations, insomnia, weight gain, stiffness, blurred vision, irregular periods (I didn’t have my period for a year!! 1 shot!!!)

I feel like there are other issues beyond bone density that need to be addressed. What about overall health, quality of life, and the growing stack of medical bills?!?!?

    Please help!

I’ve had all kinds of tests done: liver, thyroid, pap, hormones. According to my doctor there’s nothing wrong with me, except the fact that I have all these horrible, unexplanable, and incurrable symptoms!!!!!!

I’ve been poisoned. What am I supposed to do? It’s been nearly 2 years since I got the shot, and I still am being effected by it. What am I supposed to do? No one can help me or give me any answers.

I could not believed what depo prrovera has done to my entire menstrual cycle, after a year of getting the shot, i was able to get my periods after five months, but what really exhausts me is that, another cycle occurs after on the 14th day of the first cycle, i was having two menses in a month.I had also my bones scanned, to found out later that i have osteopenic bones. What a horrible experience by using this drug. Sure it helped in the removal of my endometrial cyst, but i have to suffer all the side effects.

My name is gege I received the Dep injection at 2008 just three shot, at the begining every thing seems to be great but after the third shot I start bleeding for one month, my period irrigular . after eight month from the last shot I start bleeding again, nausea all the time , bloating and sever back pain. I dont know wether theses symptoms relating to this drug but I realy sick and I went to the emergency unit because this pain and they say nothing wrong with me, I did cervical smear, vaginal scan and I have an appoitment with the privet doctor next week to seek more help, really I am so scared.

  38. Stacey on March 31st, 2009 12:28 pm

I started doing the depo shot in mid 2005 and stopped in mid 2008 and it had stopped my cycle. After I decided to stop then about 3 1/2 months my cycle came back and seems like it just never stopped. It lasted for the first month all month then stopped and one week later started again and now it is pretty much lasting 3 weeks long and very very heavy. I have actually started shaking all the time. I have always had some joint pain but this year it is getting really bad, the other morning I could barley get out of bed because my knees hurt so bad. I have not had a bone density scan but going to look into after hearing all these stories about what everyone is going through. I have been to the doctor after being on the shot for 2 years like they recommended to get information regarding this scan but he told me not to worry about it since I am only in my 20’s. Just recently I have went and seen a my doctor regarding the long and heavy cycles and he has given me a prescription to take 3 time a day for 6 weeks long and told me when I was done with that to come back and see him after about 1 month to follow up but if I started hemorrhaging then to come in right away, which really scared me. I have started doing a lot of research about this and looking to see if there was anyone out there with the same problems and I have found so many different sites with so many different stories that people are going though after this depo shot.

If there is anyone out there that has started a lawsuit please let me know I am really interested in fighting back, I know it wont give me back my full normal life but would like to get something back for what I have lost.

I started depo in 1996, when I was in the 9th grade. I had absolutely no idea of what I was getting myself into. As a child you think it’s a good thing to only have a cycle every 3 months. Unknowing to yourself that you’re messing your body up. I continue to take it throughout college and stopped one year after college when my high school sweetheart and I decided to get married. After marriage we tried for 2 years to get pregnant and no luck because I didn’t have a cycle (it never came back). After no luck I went to doctor after doctor until I had to take progestorone and then clomid to finally get pregnant. We waited for so long, only to give birth at 6 months and loose her with no one able to explain why. It has been another two years since then and I have been going through the same process to try to get pregnant again with no luck. It is causes me an extreme amount of money and heartache. There is more to the story but overall, I would love to file a lawsuit but I don’t know where to start.

I need to know how I can get information about the Depo shot that I had only take three shots of..and now they tell me that is the reason I am not able to concieve a child..I am 24 yrs old and I can count on one hand how many menstural cycles I have had since I was 17 yrs old.. I have had more problems than any grown woman I know..I have tried having a child for many years now and nothing is working..I can’t get any of the weight off that I gained while I was on the shot.. When I got on the shot I weighed 110 and in 9 months when I took my last shot I weighed 192..Yeah crazy if someone could just email me with some information on how I can speak my voice and get something done to stop this… Thank you so much!

I went on depo right after giving birth to my second child. The first year I bled almost constantly after that I stopped even having regular periods. After 4 years of being on the shot the report about bone loss finally came out. I was sent for a bone density test and was diagnosed with osetopenia. 3 years later and I still am incurring medical costs due to my substantial bone loss. I am on the verge of having knee replacement on both knees. I should tell you Im only 26. I cannot run and play with my children and just completing everyday tasks causes severe pain in my knees and hips. I feel I was robbed of healthy years of my life. Before taking the shot I was very active often going running and skiing. I can no longer do any of the things I used to love. If anyone has any information about the class action lawsuit in the USA or can reccomend a good lawyer in Michigan I would be forever grateful
    Thank you

    Hi all,

I have recently been diagnosed with menopause at the young age of 35!!!! Cannot have kids, which is devastating me!! I had a “gut” feeling that it was due to the depo shot but of course the docs say they have not heard of research that depo would cause that.
Hello!! I am SHOCKED to find this site and others and all of the symptoms that everyone is going thru. I would love to hear what you all are doing about your situations. I am currently trying to find an attorney in my area, (Karthaus, Pa). Let me know of what any of you find.

Does anyone know of any class action lawsuits in the U.S. against the makers of depo provera? I used depo from apx. 1993 - 1995, (until I was finally told of the risk of depression associated with it and stopped immediately). I suffered severe depression that completely debilitated me from 1994 - 1995. And like many women here, I didn’t get my period for over a year after I stopped using it.

I live in NYC, and am interested in joining a class action lawsuit.

I used depo from apx. 1993 - 1995 (until I was finally told of the risk associated with it). I suffered severe debilitating depression 1994 - 1995 (including 2 hospital treatment programs), and the effects lasted far longer. And similar to others I have read about, I didn’t get my period for over a year after stopping usage. While I know my symptoms aren’t as significant as some of the other women affected by this drug, I would still be interested in joining an appropriate lawsuit.

I started taking the Depo Provera in 1995 and was on it for 12 years. The side effects I suffered was the weight gain and no sex drive. In 2006 I suffered a tibia spine fracture and had knee surgery. I had the bone density test and found the Osteoporis which resulted in a hysterectomy in 2007 and a fractured patella in 2008.

I hired a attorney and all was well for the class action suit. I was told several months ago by my attorney they were no longer pursuing the case against Pfizer due to a Supreme Court ruling (medtronics) which stated if a product is approved by the FDA and not removed from the market you cannot sue the pharmacutical company. I have not heard any updated information regarding this product or lawsuits. Ladies you will have to move to Canada to pursue your case.

I have been taking 1200mg of calcium and 800mg of vitamin D a day, exercise, no alcohol or soda to slowly gain by bone mass. I have gained some bone mass back, but it is a slow process. Some of the stories I have read above I do not believe to be related to DEPO. You had to have been on the shot for consist years to have a lawsuit. GOOD LUCK!

I was on Depo for 5 years, and not once did anyone tell me to take calcium and that you are really suposed to be on it for 2 years at the most.
I was feeling so strange, pains in my legs, wrists, back, neck and tummy.
My teeth always hurt now, fillings, removals and infections.
My neck and back are in pain, my spine and neck always make crunching sounds when i move around. I felt dizzy ect told the Doc and they said it was all in my head and that it was anxiety, It was not……. people know when something is wrong with there own body and the Doc dont care at all. Wish that id never had Depo.

    Hi,
My name is cassandra. I got this shot about 2 1/2 yrs ago because my doctor said it was great b/c and plus it would regulate my period. Well I only received one shot and I bled for 3 months straight.. Then all of a sudden my period left for 8 months totally. I was told I was going through early menopause. But it returned. I began to experience hair loss, migraines, tooth pain, back pain, and pelvic pain. I was rushed to the hospital a year later and diagnosed with a 2 inch cyst on my left ovary. I am trying to conceive but unsuccessful even though I am a mother of 2 already. I also had a colonoscopy and was dx with polyps, and bleeding ulcer. I am still in constant pain 3 weeks out the month. I live on pain pains to stop the pain during these 3 weeks of pain. My gyn is doing more test because the pain wont leave. He seems to think it is endometriosis. So now I need another surgery. I am so pissed because the day I received this shot, was the day my life changed forever. I am gonna educate everyone on this poisonous injection. Do not take this shot regardless of what anyone says unless you are willing to have pain for the rest of your life. No one warned me so Im warning others.
    Good Luck.

    Hi everyone,

I, too, have been diagnosed with early menopause and have already been put on HRT! Not happy!!!! I did speak with an attorney’s secretary and she said it would have to be the doctors who are the ones to make the case so get your doctors to speak up!! The attorneys are from Marcus and Mack, if anyone is interested in contacting them just so we can get a list going. I belive this is going to become an up and coming big thing that no one is aware of yet. We need to make it aware! Let’s stick together. Leslie

I would like to know if there is a class action lawsuit in the US yet for this. I was on the shot from June 1997 until August 2007. During that whole ten years i might have had 3 periods that might have lasted 3 days each. October 4, 2008, I started my period and was bleeding very heavily. I was having to put 2 pads on at a time because of the bleeding and having to change them every 2 hours. On December 11th my husband took me to the ER because I had been cramping so badly that I was laying in a ball on the bed with the heating pad on high and me crying. The doctor’s did ultrasounds and they found a cyst on each ovary and they saw what looked like fibroid tumors in my uterus. I finally got in to a gyno and they said that the depo shot has suppressed my system too far and it was causing havoc on my body. I was put on hormone replacement medication to see about helping my body out. Finally after a week of being on the hormone meds the period quit. Every since then though I will have a period every 2 weeks and they each last about 5-7 days and is so heavy that I have to wear 2 pads at a time.

I too was on it over 6 yrs. Now, I have severe problems. Frequent back injuries, painful joints, hair loss, mood swings, depression, and when I stopped using it because I wanted to have children, my cycles never returned. I have been off it for 2 yrs. I had a bone density done two years ago and aparently there was some discrepancy in the doctors office over what was normal. The doctor won the debate and said I was in normal range even though all the nurses said he was wrong. I am now in a battle to see my file and obtain a copy. Like something is being hidden from me. And what is the black box warning? I was never told anything about that. If there is a class action, I would definately like to be involved. Feel free to email me at Heikki33@yahoo.com

I’m so sad reading all these stories, and im sorry to each and every one of you. Here is my story…I got the depo shot after i had my daughter in 2004. I was 18 years old, and only planned on being on it a year because i wanted another baby. I was doin ok until my last shot in August ‘05, they had switched suppliers and made me wait there for 20 minutes to make sure i didnt have a reaction. I was fine until the next day and i woke up and was having an anxiety attack ( I had no clue what it was at the time). I called the doctors office and told the receptionist my problem and she said it sounded like an upper respiratory problem and that there was no way it had anything to do with the depo shot. I ended up in the er two or three times because of it and they wanted to put me on Xanax but i was still breastfeeding so they couldn’t, and the problems just continued from there. Stomach pains that i was convinced was appendicitis because it hurt so bad multiple times had me in the er getting multiple xrays, vaginal ultrasounds, blood tests and all i’ve been told is they cant see anything wrong with me. Around the same time i was on the shot and to this date, its actually gotten worse, i have pain, in my left ovary region almost all the time. I get maybe two periods a year, and the last time i actually had three in a row I became pregnant and i was ecstatic, I had a miscarriage. The sadness and loss from that still hurts so much. And now i have fibromyalgia- and i’m 24 years old. The fibromyalgia hasn’t been diagnosed yet because i dont have health insurance- but i know i have it. Im so sick of these problems and reading all of your stories has had me here balling, and i dont understand how they can use us as guinea pigs and ruin our lives and not have to pay. I have a very close friend who has osteoporosis from the depo shot and having other major medical issues right now. I want justice and to save any other women out there from going through this. God bless and i’m on a mission now and anything i can do to get our stories out there i’m going to try. Anyone else with information or wanting some can email me. ambers719@msn.com

I included the link to this site and im going to keep on until somebody listens to us, like most on here, i would just like to be able to get help with my medical issues and hopefully correct some problems without owing the er thousands of dollars, which i do now because of my problems from the depo. I would also like Depo to be banned and people aware of how the doctors and pharmaceutical companies have ruined our lives and seem to not care. God Bless ladies and i hope for all of our sake somebody helps us :)

I’m 31 and I was on depo from about 2002-Jan 2010 (last month) Over the years I have had weight gain, loss of sex drive, and developed Hashimotos Thyroiditus (hypothyroid). My dr took me off of it mainly because of the weight gain. I was never advised to have a bone density scan, but after reading these comments, I think I should have one done. I asked my dr if there were any side effects from coming off the shot, after reading some stories I found online, and he told me he’d never heard of any side effects, accept for possible problem with getting pregnant, which I was ok with, since my husband and I don’t want children. I’ve been dealing with my thyroid problem for a couple years now, and neither my primary care dr, my gyno or endo told me it could be because of the depo. When I first when on depo (age 24) I loved hearing that I wouldn’t get my period, i wish I would have been more mature and asked questions about side effects.

Ok ladies. I am a legal receptionist for medical malpractice attorneys. I have been using my “connections” to see what I can find out. How many of us have problems unrelated to bone density/osteoperosis? We need to figure it out so we can see if we have a case. Apparently, there was litigation about bone loss and osteoperosis several years ago, so cases pertaining to that are pretty much done with… But the link between Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and other hormonal issues hasn’t been tried and I think we have a pretty strong case, especially if there are several of us. A legal assistant who has provided information is:

Let’s band together and get this information out there!!

I just came across an article that ran in the NY Times on Jan 8, 2010 ‘Risks: Loss of Bone Mass Linked to Contraceptive’.

    Here’s the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/health/12risk.html?fta=y

At least it’s finally getting some attention

My niece is what they now call an “early gainer” — a skinny little girl who quickly gained 100 pounds on depo, and now has continual headaches. We will find out soon if she also has developed insulin resistance and/or bone loss. This drug has totally changed her life and from what I’m reading, the changes may be permanent. Frankly, Pfizer should suffer for what they are doing to the disadvantaged girls who go to low-cost clinics.

Got something to say?
